KT's magical turnaround in the KBO! 5th place team advances to Semi-Po for the first time

For the first time in the history of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), KT has pulled off the upset of the fifth-place team in the wild card deciding game and advanced to the semifinals (best-of-five).

KT defeated Doosan 1-0 in the second game of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO Postseason Wild Card Decision at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul today (March 3) behind a complete-game shutout by starter Wes Benjamin and a walk-off single by Kang Baek-ho.

KT, which had won Game 1 of the wild-card decider 4-0 to send the series to Game 2, made history by becoming the first fifth-place team to defeat a fourth-place team to advance to the semifinals since the wild-card decider was introduced in 2015.

KT and Doosan didn't have much of a chance early in the game, as both teams were locked down by left-handed starters in Choi Seung-yong and Benjamin.

But in the sixth inning, Rojas led off with a double, and Jang Sung-woo sent him to third with a big fly ball to right field. With a one-out runner on third, 토토사이트 KT broke the scoreless tie with a single by fixer Kang Baek-ho.

On the mound, Benjamin tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six, before Ko Young-pyo (eighth) and Park Young-hyun (ninth) pitched one inning each to combine for the team's second shutout in as many days.

The Doosan bats, on the other hand, went cold just four days after finishing the regular-season finale on May 28, going scoreless for 18 consecutive innings in a lethargic loss.

As a result, Doosan, who finished fifth last year and ended the postseason one game short of the Wild Card Decider after losing to fourth-place NC, lost two consecutive games despite needing only one win this year to advance, failing to cross the threshold of the Wild Card Decider (WC), the first gateway to fall baseball, for the second consecutive year.

KT will open the first round of the Semi-Po against LG, which finished third in the regular season, at 2 p.m. on May 5 at Jamsil Stadium.
